A short history
of the Aceralia Group
Aceralia's origins date back to
1902 when three companies - Altos Hornos
de Bilbao, La Vizcaya and La Iberia - merged
to form Altos Hornos de Vizcaya. At the
time it was set up, this was the biggest
company in the country and its location
was chosen in consideration of the iron
deposits existing in the Bilbao surrounds,
the nearby seaport and the area's metalworking
tradition. Almost half a century later,
in 1950, Ensidesa - Empresa Nacional Siderúrgica
Sociedad Anónima - was founded in
Asturias, with the purpose of supporting
the economic development in Spain during
the sixties. Ensidesa became an important
iron&steel company at a national level,
after taking over Uninsa in 1973. |

It was further to the implementation of "AHV-Ensidesa
Joint Competitiveness Plan" in December
1994 that the CSI Group (Corporación
Siderúrgica Integral) was set up.
Its restructuring in 1977 led to the creation
of Aceralia Corporación Siderúrgica.
In Aceralia's privatising process, there
was a number of landmarks: a strategic
alliance with the Arbed Group, being one
of the major iron&steel companies in
the world; the acquisition of the Aristrain
Group, the first Spanish manufacturer of
shapes; and two years later, the purchase
of the Ucín Group, a leading manufacturer
of corrugated bar and wire rod. As a result,
Aceralia consolidated itself as Spain's
largest steel manufacturer, with an output
in the region of 10 million tons. |
